The Bible Doesn’t Say That (pt 1) | God Helps Those Who Help Themselves

There are many phrases used among churchgoers that sound Scriptural yet are contrary to what Scripture actually teaches. These erroneous beliefs about God and our Christian walk can be damaging rather than helpful. This five-week series looks at common misconceptions and what Scripture actually tells us about how believers should approach these situations in life.

 

In our first installment of this series, we look at how the belief that “God helps those who help themselves” often feeds an unhealthy mindset that we alone are responsible for our fulfillment, security, and well-being.

We will be hindered from embracing God's truth until we address the root of our doubt.  Three primary roots are: church hurt, intellectual, and moral.  To move forward we must confess and repent of unforgiveness, pride, and selfishness.

We should evaluate our lifestyle in light of the accusations and labels being attributed to us as Christians so that we can respond accurately and thoughtfully.  One of the primary reasons people claim for leaving the faith is hypocrisy.

When people leave the faith, we must be aware of our response toward them.  Do we look down on them?  Do we show them love or do we turn up our noses like the elder brother in the story of the Prodigal Son?  We must strive to be more like the father in the parable and less like the elder brother.  We must treat our friends who have left the faith with love and respect, being eager to show them the same type of love Jesus shows to the lost.

Christians play a vital role in God's Interruption System.  While God is drawing all men unto Himself and interrupting/moving in people's lives, it's the responsibility of Christ-followers to help interpret God's activity in their lives.  Christians are sent.

Jesus is interrupted by people across all social and religious hierarchies. He makes time for the hurting and responds to their faith.  God is not too busy to be interrupted by your concerns. Allow him to shoulder your load.

God is interrupting because He is speaking.  Our response to God's voice is all that matters in this life.

He can use these “accidents” and “interruptions” for His glory, and we can find grace in the divine interruptions that occur in our own lives.
